fragrant by parasol pines, shimmering with cicada song. It’s enough
to inspire not only deep relaxation but the artist in anyone. Picasso,
who arguably invented sun-seeking, painted here: his work is on
display at the Grimaldi Château. Antibes is an elegant alternative
to the self-conscious bustle of Cannes and Nice. Several yacht
harbours and the convoluted coastal road open up this stretch of
the French Rivera to those seeking escape from the crowds.

There are few more charming choices than this fairytale village,
complete with heritage surf scene. Taking in in the rugged
coastline as you bob on your board, waiting for the next set of
waves to roll in, is hard to beat. Or, take the Scenic Blu昀昀 Path to
Carmel River State Beach, famous for its 昀氀ourishing bird and sea
life. There’s even a scuba entry point to view the coast from a truly
submarine perspective.
Getting there: The closest airport is Monterey Regional (MRY),
located 8km away.

A stunning drive up the Onna Coast, where Cape Manzamo’s
sheer cli昀昀s plunge into deep jade bays, takes you to Okinawa’s
choicest beachfront, forest canopy and pro golf resorts. Further
south, remote Ishigaki is even more exquisite and retains its
traditional, romantic and musical culture. Swim with giant mantas
year-round, kayak to the luminous Blue Cave or explore the reefs
and rock formations in the peace that only a stand-up paddle
board can bring.
