DESERT ESCAPE IN JORDAN
A visit to the archaeological icon of Petra
is high on many luxury travellers’ bucket
lists, and it's easy to see why. Upon arrival,
the 20-minute journey through the Siq,
a winding sandstone gorge leading to
Al-Khazneh, Petra’s most famous marvel,
builds anticipation with every step. Carved
over 2,000 years ago into the face of the
coral-pink canyon, this ornately chiselled
masterpiece rising from the rock is a
spectacular sight to behold. A private visit
at night, when the façade is illuminated by
candlelight, is particularly moving. And, while
Al-Khazneh may be Petra’s crown jewel, bear
in mind that this UNESCO World Heritage
city has over 800 monuments to discover.
Just over an hour from Petra, Wadi Rum
unfolds like another world entirely. A vast,
protected desert where Lawrence of Arabia
once roamed, this Mars-like landscape is
de昀椀ned by rippling red dunes, imposing
sandstone mountains, and canyons carved
by time itself. Just seeing it is enough to
make you feel tiny but truly alive.
