Papua New Guinea’s Huli men stand out for
their vivid face paint in bold patterns of red,
yellow and white, signaling vitality, spirit, and
clan identity. Equally distinctive are their
wigs, cultivated from their own hair and
shaped into elaborate forms decorated with
feathers and ornaments.
In the forests of West Papua, Based On
A True Story’s guests were received by a
nomadic community with virtually no history
of outside contact. Access was possible only
after careful negotiation with local leaders,
and the meeting followed strict protocols of
respect and consent.
Accompanying them into the jungle, the
visitors were taught how to catch food, 昀椀sh,
and create clothes from tree bark, before
spending the night at a simple base camp
constructed by their expedition team.
Wildlife encounters in New Guinea are
equally compelling. Birds of Paradise 昀氀ash
through the canopy; divers can explore some
of the most pristine coral reefs on the planet;
whale sharks glide through clear waters; and
jungle treks reveal rugged peaks, surging
rivers and extraordinary biodiversity.
Every journey here is uniquely rewarding,
whether navigating dense forest trails,
conversing with elders at dusk, or listening
to the rhythm of ancestral songs. Travel
in New Guinea fosters profound cultural
connections driven by curiosity and respect.
